Confused I am never sure how much wine i am allowed to drink. I am on injection of Methetrexate 20 mgs.
When i first went on it the nurse said no more than two glasses a week. Another nurse said i could have a glass everynight but i've read somewhere that you can have 14 units a week. Anyone any idea? I never have much but i do like wine. Sometimes if its a special ocassion or holiday i feel like having more. My blood is tested every month so i suppose It would show up if i had too much. Any ideas? Kathleen Mc.

Hi Kathleen,

My consultant told me it was ok to drink with mtx as long as we don't go over the recommended weekly units ( I think that's 14, not too sure?)
I have about 100mls of wine every day with my main meal, if we go out for a meal I have a full glass (sometimes a large one!).
Wine is about the only alcohol I drink now but I would miss it if I couldn't have any.

I have one glass a day Kathleen and 2 at weekends. I agree with you that if it was doing me any harm I think it would show up on the blood testing. I think it's another case of we are all different in how we react to the Metho. If I had any dodgy readings on my blood tests I would cut it out.

I've just started to take MTX and I asked my nurse about drinking.

She told me that they don't want to stop me having something that I like and if I didn't go over my weekly recommended units it should be alright. Adding that if my blood results did alter I would have to tell them that I had been drinking and they would advise to stop for a few weeks and then see if it was the wine that was the problem.

Because I only normally have a drink at the weekend I have been wondering if it would be alright to have my weekly allowance spread over a few days and not daily. Common sense though does tell me that if I put too much alchol into my body in one go then my liver not only as to cope with the MTX but with drink at the same time. I've also been told to take the MTX on a Friday morning...........the start of the weekend.

In the booklet she gave me the one that you keep your blood test record in it states that you are allowed to have your daily units if it is well within the daily amount 2-3 units per day..........I think that's answered the above question.Sad Sad Sad

I did have a drink yesterday evening, I sat for ages looking on the internet about how much to drink when on MTX. I then decided it was best to do what the nurse had said. I was such a good girl.LOL LOL

Just want to add.........

When I was looking on the internet about drinking when taking MTX one thing I read did confuse me some what.

I thought that the MTX along with wine could damage your liver, so that why you have to be careful of how much you drink, both being toxic to the liver. I read somewhere yesterday that blood tests alone do not show if there is any damage in the liver due to drinking, you have to have a liver biopsy to confirm this. It really is as clear as mud to me.......confusing or what?

OOOH they stole MY wine glass! LOL

My fav subject- wine!

I used to be on MTX and so had to limit my wine drinking to one glass a night (sometimes two) and two at weekends too with one or two days drinking nothing (although that was a rarity!).

Now I am expecting again I go off wine anyway so am not drinking at all and I can't WAIT to sip a HUGE glass of champagne holding my little baby!!!!!!

Love,

Amanda
